This set of Matryoshka dolls is completely handmade and unique. Each single doll is made of natural wood (linden tree). They are all mostly painted with tempera and richly decorated with golden leaf. The dolls are usually covered with 4-6 layers of lacquer.
The given nesting doll is drawn upon with motives from the Great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin’s fairy tale «The Gold Cockerel ».
This fairy tale is one of the most famous among Pushkin’s creations. There is also an opera based on this story. A very rich tsar named Dadon had absolutely everything except true love. One day a magician came to his palace and gave him an unusual gift - a golden cockerel which was to be helpful for the tsar to rule the country. But Dadon thought that since he had this magic cockerel he could turn any wish into reality. So he wished to marry a princess from the neighboring kingdom…
