This set of Matryoshka dolls is completely handmade and unique. Each single doll is made of natural wood (linden tree). They are all mostly painted with tempera and richly decorated with golden leaf. The dolls are usually covered with 4-6 layers of lacquer.
The nesting dolls are painted in traditional colors – black, red and gold, based on the famous Pushkin fairy tale “Ruslan and Ludmila". This story was Pushkin’s first major work. It’s one of the most classical creations of Russian literature. There is also an opera named after this poem, which is usually performed in the theaters of St. Petersburg. It is a beautiful love story, full of humor, mystic and romanticism at the same time. Right after the wedding Ruslan’s bride Ludmila disappears and a Russian knight has to rescue her.
