Lacquer miniatures rank as one of the most original and diverse handicrafts that developed in keeping with century old traditions. It takes around 6 months for the artist to make this lacquer casket. This box is made of paper-mâché which could be shaped into widely diverse forms. It is painted with tempera (pigment) painting and golden powder. This box is lacquered about 8-10 times.
The composition of this box is modeled in the early icon-painting style. Artist arranged dozens of figures on the boxes surface, uniting them in a continuous ornamental pattern. According to the icon-painting tradition it’s made in bright colors with a lot of red and golden accents.
One of the most traditional fairy tales (The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights) is illustrated, which was written by the famous Russian writer Alexander Pushkin. The story has a rich plot and is full of different characters. We can recognize it by the look of the box, a big surface all covered with painting as the painting on casket is inseparably linked with its form. Let’s step into this fairy-tale world…
